About Jean-Michel Jacoulot
Jean-Michel Jacoulot is an experienced Chief Executive Officer in oil and gas, an industry in which he has spent all of his career.
In 2016, he co-founded Trident Energy, a global oil and gas exploration and production company backed by Warburg Pincus, one of the leading Private Equity firms in Energy.
Jean-Michel Jacoulot graduated from INSA Lyon, the French National Institute of Applied Sciences, in 1991 and holds an MSc in Petroleum Engineering and Project Development from the IFP School, the French Institute of Petroleum. After three years as a Project Engineer in Venezuela and Paris for IFP Group, he joined Perenco, an independent oil and gas exploration and production company, in 1995.
Jean-Michel Jacoulot held a range of roles at Perenco before becoming its Chief Executive Officer. He spent his first year with the company as an Asset Manager in Gabon, before moving to Colombia where he was a Project and Production Engineer for around three years. In his next role as the Country General Manager for Venezuela, he was initially responsible for building up the subsidiary following its acquisition from BP. He then oversaw the integration of another unit subsequently acquired from Phillips (now ConocoPhillips). He was in charge of Business Development, maintaining the subsidiary’s relationships with the Regulatory Authorities and the National Oil Company in Venezuela, as well as overseeing Operations.
After three years in Venezuela, Jean-Michel Jacoulot became Perenco’s Country General Manager for Guatemala. There, he was in charge of managing the production of 25,000 barrels of oil per day, two oil fields, a refinery, an asphalt business with 100 trucks, 500 kilometres of pipeline, 6 pumping stations, and an onshore terminal. Similarly to in his previous role, he oversaw Operations and Business Development, and maintained relationships with the Regulatory Authorities in the country.
He left Guatemala for Paris in 2003, where he was Perenco’s Africa Area Manager for two years. He oversaw all aspects of the company’s operations in Africa, from the integration of acquired assets, to Finance, Risk Management and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
From 2005 to 2007, Jean-Michel Jacoulot was the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Perenco. Based in London, he oversaw the restructuring of the company and M&A activity. A key focus point for him in that role was reinforcing the “Perenco excellence in Operations”, which consisted of establishing a Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) culture within the organization, improving standards, and creating an Internal Audit department. He was responsible for the corporate budget as well as relationships with partners and Government at the highest level.
Jean-Michel Jacoulot was promoted to Chief Executive Officer of Perenco in 2007. In his nine years in the role, the company completed a series of successful acquisitions of mid-life assets and conducted major development projects, which saw a doubling of the Group’s reserves and operated-production to 450,000 boepd.
He left Perenco in 2016 to create Trident Energy alongside Eric Descourtieux, the former Chief Financial Officer of Perenco. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Trident Energy Management Limited.
